How does it happen that self identifying American Conservatives are far more likely to share a lunatic fringe article that levels ridiculous accusations that former President Barack Obama engaged in unlawful political espionage (written by the same conspiracy lunatic who, in 2016, claimed officials at NASA had admitted using mind control “chemtrails” on Americans) than to share an article on CNN that reported our government has lost track of 1,475 children separated from their parents by border patrol agents in 2017.
Are Americans really this stupid? Not exactly, though there is strong evidence that these people tend to be far less educated than other voters. In most cases, these people have developed strong anti-intellectual biases because the journalistic media, dominated as it is by journalism majors, have been repeatedly exposed as biased. Exacerbating this anti-intellectual fervor has been the total loss of faith in the scientific community since the unraveling of climate change hysteria.
Combine this seething undercurrent of distrust of both the media and the scientific community with a congenitally dishonest compulsive liar as president, and we have a recipe for a crisis of national proportions. To this day, there are millions of anti-intellectual voters who, even after the National Parks Service released photographic evidence irrefutably disproving the president’s ridiculous claims, still believe there were more people at Donald Trump‘s inauguration than ever before.
Discrimination is a hellhound that gnaws at Negroes in every waking moment of their lives to remind them that the lie of their inferiority is accepted as truth in the society dominating them.
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
Sadly, yes, the fact is that some of these anti-intellectual Americans are just dumber than average, and a small portion of these people suffer from some form of paranoiac delusion that makes them especially susceptible to overt psychological manipulation. And what of those that don’t fall into these two camps? Many simply don’t know what to believe anymore, so they believe the avalanche of nonsense just to have something, anything, to believe in.
However, the moment a Black American dares to suggest that a Blacks are three times more likely to be killed by a police officer than a white person, that an unarmed Black suspect is more likely to be shot and killed than an unarmed white suspect, that two-thirds of Black suspects killed by police weren’t even suspected of a violent crime, and that, 99% of the time, no criminal charges were brought against a police officer after a shooting incident (all stats from mappingpoliceviolence.org), all the sudden, these anti-intellectual Trump voters remember how to be skeptical?
Convenient.
