Let’s start with some basic facts taken directly from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website as of data from July 14, 2020. The total number of COVID-19 cases was at 3,355,457. The total number of deaths from COVID-19 was 135,235. So, of 328.2 million Americans (estimated), presently more than 1% of the population has contracted and has been positively tested for the COVID-19 virus.

Of these people, according to current mortality rates (which is the number of deaths divided by number of infections), 4% of them have died from it. An overall mortality rate of only 0.04%, therefor, seems an awful small number, and a great many people have proven they are perfectly content to stop their thinking right there. For those of us who are not stupid, however, let’s take the next logical step and extrapolate the numbers to a 100% infection rate across the entire population.

If we assume mortality rates would remain exactly the same for a completely uncontrolled spread of the virus compared to the mortality rates under the current regimen of social distancing protocols (something only a total idiot would believe), that would result in the deaths of over 12,000,000 people or roughly the entire population of New York City.

Is the entire population of New York City not enough? And remember that we’re assuming the mortality rate of this virus wouldn’t increase at all even after we infect every American who is immune-suppressed, critically ill, elderly, or otherwise susceptible to an aggressive virus that attacks the lungs. Who’s stupid enough to believe this? A lot of Americans, apparently.

Now, let’s put this issue into terms even the no mask morons can understand. We’ll simply assume that they are right and this whole COVID-19 thing is being purposefully exaggerated, and it’s not really as deadly as everyone is making it out to be. Sweden, France, the UK, China, Japan, South Korea, and dozens of other countries are all just trying to make Trump look bad by publishing their death statistics that defy what he’s been saying every single day.

We’ll assume that there are far fewer people actually being killed by the virus than even the CDC has reported, or, at least, that the chances of dying from the disease are so remote that there is absolutely no reason to wear a mask, practice social distancing, or take any other advised measure to curtail the spread. Small chances of dying means no duty to protect others. After all, who even knows of anyone that’s died of COVID-19, right?

Okay. If you fire a gun into the air, it is simply a fact that a bullet is tiny compared to the overall area to which the bullet could fall. Statistically speaking, the chances of a bullet fired into the air over a populated area actually hitting someone, let alone killing them, are fantastically small. You might even call them remote. After all, who even knows of anyone that’s died of being hit by a falling bullet?

Do “no mask” proponents argue that people should be allowed to fire their guns into the air? After all, I have a “right” to keep and bear arms, and, according to the Constitution, my right to discharge my weapon into the air is mentioned just as many times as their right to not wear a mask during a pandemic. After all, far be it from them to invent rights that aren’t actually “enshrined” in the Constitution, right?

In exactly the same way that good and decent person shouldn’t have to be told not to discharge their weapon into the air, a good and decent person shouldn’t have to be told to take reasonable precautions to avoid spreading COVID-19, because that person would be as morally complicit in the death of someone struck by a falling bullet that they fired into the air as they would be in the death of someone who contracted a dangerous virus that they passed along.

Only people who don’t need to be told to do what is good and noble also don’t need to feel the yoke of tyrannical government. The no mask crowd not only proves they need the yoke of tyrannical government but that they deserve it.
