Even while coronavirus and COVID-19 has shut down the American economy (with worse yet to come), it would be uncharitable to lay all the blame for this fiasco at the feet of the president. However, it would also take an idiot to give this administration a pass for months of bungling and purposeful misinformation that will absolutely cause many people to lose their livelihoods and far too many their lives.
When the World Health Organization first received a report of the COVID-19 coronavirus at their China office on December 31, 2019, the virus was still poorly understood, thanks largely to the total incompetence of Chinese government officials, but what was known was that it was not under control and it was killing people. In just a few weeks, the coronavirus had become a full blown pandemic.
As the first cases of coronavirus were being reported stateside, Trump personally downplayed the seriousness of the disease, going so far as to claim the media coverage (and, by extension, the virus itself) was nothing but a political “hoax“. In the critical weeks that followed, Trump repeatedly stood before his supporters and claimed the threat posed by coronavirus was being exaggerated merely to attack him, and they bought it.
With the deadly virus spreading across the United States, on February 26th, 2020, Trump said “What it’s going to do is keep people home, and they’re going to travel to places that we have. We have the greatest – it’s the greatest tourism country in the world. So instead of leaving our country, leaving our shores, they’ll stay here.” Yes, Donald “the stable genius” Trump actually thought domestic tourism would be a good idea during a pandemic.
Now the Trump administration and his cronies have finally begun to take the pandemic seriously, but the reality is that it’s far too little and far too late. The Surgeon General, Jerome Adams, said, “This is going to be our Pearl harbor moment, our 9/11 moment, only it’s not going to be localized. It’s going to be happening all over the country, and I want America to understand that.“
Meanwhile, Trump’s idiot son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who is still inexplicably making statements for the White House, despite his only qualification for doing so being that he’s sleeping with Trump’s favorite daughter, said that federal reserves of medical supplies would not be distributed to the states. This is the country we live in. People are going to die, because idiots voted for someone just like them: an idiot’s idiot.
And they’re going to vote for him again… if the coronavirus doesn’t kill them first.
