Independence by Dissent and Treason

True patriot Conservatives understand that our nation was itself born of dissent and literal treason and, so long as the cause is just, such dissent and treason is our right and our duty.

A year into a war that would change the shape of the world for centuries to come, men who had traveled from across the country arrived in Pennsylvania’s State House. These men were faced with the challenge of answering a single question, a question that had, over the course of two years, resulted in political resistance, growing civil disobedience, and finally open revolt in confrontations that began in Lexington and Concord.

Over weeks of discussion, these men became resigned to a single conclusion. There was no longer any realistic hope of peaceful reconciliation with the government of their birth, and the reasons for their dissent, being many and just, finally lead them to but one course of action: Independence. They knew well the natural risk to themselves and to their countrymen this choice entailed. By declaring themselves truly independent of the crown, they would committing treason against the Crown of England.

On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress put a motion to vote on the question of whether the colonies would formally declare independence from the British Crown. The vote to declare independence from the crown was unanimous. At that moment, our nation was born. The Declaration of Independence that was signed two days later was but the birth certificate of the infant United States of America.

“The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most
memorable
Epocha, in the History of America.”
-John Adams-

The present political climate is nothing short of unsettling, as what was once the Conservative movement folds in on itself like some deranged animal, biting its own tail, recoiling in pain, only to assault its own flesh again. As the political winds continue to turn against the Republican White House, the president’s rank and file supporters turn on anyone that criticizes their president, now hurling accusations of “treason” at anyone that continues to put principle before party.

Their behavior can only be explained as partisan insanity born of people fueled by their own ignorance and blind rage. These wretches, in their fear and desperation, have abandoned the firm ground of age old principles of individual freedom and self determination in exchange for the vain glory of one man’s cult of personality. It has become abundantly clear that, with them, there can no longer be any rational debate. With them, their can be no reconciliation.

True patriot Conservatives understand that our nation was itself born of dissent and literal treason and, so long as the cause is just, such dissent and treason is our right and our duty.

“But when a long train of abuses and usurpations,
pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design
to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their
right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government…”
-Thomas Jefferson, Declaration of Independence-

If the Conservative movement is to survive, “principle before party” Conservatives must forge a course forward, and we must do so independent of the cultish mob that has consumed the party of Reagan. Just as our Founding Fathers resigned themselves to do on a hot July day in 1776, so will we, as principled and patriotic Conservatives who put Liberty before party and principles before politics, must “dissolve the political bands” that bind us to those who would put us on a course toward national infamy and moral bankruptcy.

The choice before patriot Conservatives cannot be any more clear: submit to mad cult of an ego maniacal president or seek to form a more perfect political party based not on political expedience and pedestrian pragmatism but on what is right for all Americans. Do we trade the despotism of the Left for the despotism of a corporatist profiteer, or do we rein in our out of control government and a reestablish the form and function of government that once ensured the common rights and prosperity of our fore fathers?

The answer is clear. We must retake up the work started on this day 241 years ago and dedicate ourselves to the purpose of reforming a more perfect union and to ensuring the personal Liberties of all Americans, regardless of their political beliefs, their ethnicity, or any other happy accident of their birth. Every man, woman, and child is endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights, and our duty, as citizens of these the United States of America, is to seek a government than ensures that those unalienable rights are protected.

The Culture War: Raising the Bar

When the large majority of Americans once again understand that we are all moral equals, no more or less entitled to the same rights and no more or less encumbered by the same duties, then we will achieve the society that we seek.

Donald Trump’s managed to make a habit out of jumping one shark after another with no negative consequences at all, at least not with his devoted supporters. Hillary Clinton has also had her moments of inglorious infamy, yet her supporters remain as devoted as ever. So in less than a week, we’re finally going to see which of these terrible human beings is going to be president, and the other will go back to whatever gilded plutocrat lifestyle they had before.

What kind of country tolerates two such contemptuous, pathological liars, both with long pedigrees of being insufferable human beings as their leaders? And not with any shame or mild reluctance. The people supporting Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump do so with the blazing conviction of a missionary subjugating “primitives” of a conquered land. This is much more true of Donald’s supporters, who hurl the ugliest and most vile of insults they can imagine if someone so much as criticizes Donald.

I became devotedly #NeverTrump largely due to how Donald’s supporters have behaved during the Republican Primaries and into the general election. Their naked aggression, vitriol, bigotry, and viciousness made it clear that Donald Trump could never be allowed to attain the highest office in the land. If simply his candidacy could inspire such ignoble behavior in the Republican electorate after just a few months of campaigning, imagine what his toxic personality would do to our country given four years.

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.
It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
-John Adams-

Clearly, if we are to deserve a better government, we have to become better people. So what does becoming “better people” entail? I submit that we must work to reclaim the culture of the Founding. No, I don’t mean we go back to wearing wigs and tricorn hats. Nor do I suggest that any election to any office can achieve this goal. Only a daily effort to seek to leave our country better than it was the day before, moving inch by precious inch back to the basic governing philosophical tenets that inspired and informed the decisions of the Founding Fathers in the first place.

(1) During the colonial era, it was widely understood that the public virtue was a reflection of private virtue. It followed that if you had a society of virtuous people, you did not need many laws, because virtuous people tend to act in accord with their virtue. It follows also that a society of unvirtuous people has little need for many laws, because they would disregard most of the laws anyway. This comes with a general lack of virtue. So our first order of business must be instituting a culture of virtue, because without private virtue, rule of law is impossible.

(2) Even before the Constitution or Declaration of Independence, it was understood that government was evil, even if it were necessary. The Founding Fathers were men who knew history proved government has ever been used by some to impose their will on others. To this end, wealthy cabals would form to support one tyrant or another, collaborating in order to protect their political and economic security. This “Establishment”, by its own deeds, has always been the enemy of the people. To defeat them, we must throw back the curtain behind which they hide, and reveal them to the public via political transparency.

(3) The only possible just society is one of virtuous people who do not need government with a government that does not interfere with them. It is not the duty of government to be generous or benevolent, because a government can be neither, being inanimate and artificial objects that have no more moral agency than a spoon or a shovel. Government is made up of people who have no more right or authority than any one else. Since the people themselves are morally obligated to intercede on their own behalf, people in government are only empowered to intercede against the government, not the necessarily the people. While exceptions for criminality should and do exist, this was the guiding philosophical basis for the Constitution: a law written to constrain the government.

“Therefore, when the Way is lost there is virtue.
When virtue is lost there is benevolence.
When benevolence is lost there is righteousness.
When righteousness is lost there are rituals.
Rituals are the end of fidelity and honesty,
And the beginning of confusion.”
-Lao Tzu-

This is the culture that must be restored in America, and why we desperately need a cultural political movement that reflects these values within our civic life. To borrow from Hillary Clinton, proving the old adage that even a broken clock is right at least twice a day, “America is great because America is good.” She is right in this. A virtuous and moral society results from a virtuous and moral people. Where she is wrong is how far from virtuous we are as a people and how we have deviated.

She believes, after all, that government is the solution to our virtue problem, and nothing could be further from the truth. It is upon conservatives to reignite the guiding fires of virtue, not through force, conflict, or shaming but by example. Though it may seem counter intuitive, it is possible to have a society that is morally virtuous without being puritanical. People and the arts, after all, have a fundamental right to express ideas and thoughts that may not be in line with moral norms, so long as they do so without harming others.

That is not to say we adopt the failed ideology of multi-culturalism. I am not talking about condoning multiple cultures. There is one culture of fundamental Americanism, as was described, in part, above. While other elements, such as a shared language, are also necessary, it is the underlying duty to self sufficiency that is paramount. When the large majority of Americans once again understand that we are all moral equals, no more or less entitled to the same rights and no more or less encumbered by the same duties, then we will achieve the society that we seek.

Summer Soldiers and Sunshine Patriots

“Does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave over the land of the free and the home of the brave?” Or does it hangs over the funeral procession of long dead Liberty with scavengers picking over her still corpse as we watch in silent horror, yet do nothing.

It was a harsh calling out of the American character, when American men and women still took honor seriously. An insult of one’s courage was an insult against one’s honor and required a response. Thomas Paine was rapping on the door of that culture of masculinity when he wrote The American Crisis. Starting the pamphlet with a challenge to all combat aged men of the colonies and a compliment to those serving their country in the uncertain months of 1776. And it is just as much a rebuke now of the American countryman who stands idle while his country is in peril.

In the two hundred and forty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, our nation’s very existence has been threatened by the British twice, the Civil War, two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Cold War, Islamic Terrorism, the Great Recession, and our greatest threat of all, the National Debt. Of all of the items on this list, only the last is self inflicted, and only it will likely lead to our impending destruction, because the majority of Americans refuses to do anything about it.

So devoted are these people to not doing anything about it, they have created a bogeyman political issue of “illegal immigration“, which did not even make the list. It did not make the list, because illegal immigration does not fundamentally threaten the culture of this country. The reality is the country that the Founders gave us is gone, and the illegal immigrants are simply feasting on the corpse of a nation whose People have traded their Liberty for security and deserve neither, while lacking the moral fortitude to do what is necessary to rectify it. We’ve become a culture of fear.

“‘Tis surprising to see how rapidly a panic will sometimes run
through a country. All nations and ages have been subject to them.”
-Thomas Paine-

Culturally, America was founded on the principles of Liberty, which required a small and limited government. This also required that Americans be willing to suffer the risk of personal deprivation while providing for themselves, because there was no government to rescue them. With each wave of immigration in the past, the “tempest tossed” newcomers found that, while there was no government to sustain them, there was also no government to keep them from the profit of their industry.

As government made no effort to control employment, jobs, however mean, were plentiful. The good hearted proprietor could usually offer a few pennies to hire an ambitious young immigrant, and those pennies were often all that was needed for a family to get by. This was America from July 4th, 1776 until the dawn of the 20th Century, when the progressive leftists finally won. Those penny jobs that children worked in the hours after school to help their families make ends meet became, according to the progressive leftists, “exploitative“, as did a great many other American values.

America began to change, mutate, and ultimately lose its culture of independence, all in the name, assured the progressive leftists, of society advancing forward. It was, after all, what all the other advanced countries were doing. America had to fit in with European democratic socialism or it wasn’t fit to be associated with them. So in came a wave of social and economic reforms, including the government suddenly dictating which wages were legal and which were not, the introduction of welfare programs, and, the coup d’ grace, the institutionalization of taxation to pay for these fancy new programs.

This is when America died. One hundred years ago, when Americans forgot that the price of economic and political security was the loss of sacred Liberty.

“I should not be afraid to go with a hundred Whigs against
thousand Tories, were they to attempt to get into arms.
Every Tory is a coward; for servile, slavish, self-interested
fear is the foundation of Toryism; and a man under such
influence, though he may be cruel, never can be brave.”
-Thomas Paine-

We’ve fallen a long way from the days in which Thomas Paine wrote to a fledgling nation of men and women who were just beginning to understand the full ramifications of war against the British Crown. Before that moment in history, it was impossible to even conceive of telling the government what the people made and how they made it was of no business of the government. That was the fundamental core of who the American people were. How, then, have we come to be who we are now?

A people so emaciated of the will to suffer and fight that we attack any who would try to tear down the sacred cows of Social Security, Medicare, Welfare, taxation of personal incomes, and the minimum wage, the very things that are destroying our country right before our eyes. Now, when threatened with the very extinction of our nation, many reject the very principles that the nation was founded on and cling ever tighter to the very progressive leftist policies that have done so much damage to it.

We have become a nation of Toryism, individuals so married to nationality that they will fight against those awakened few who stand for Liberty. As we celebrate the two hundred and fortieth anniversary of our Founders taking up arms against their countrymen to fight for the cause of Liberty, so it has come to pass that true American patriots of Liberty seem once again poised to fight against their countrymen for the cause of Liberty, if only the spirit of resistance remains strong enough to do so.

“I thank God, that I fear not. I see no real cause for fear.
I know our situation well, and can see the way out of it.”
-Thomas Paine-

This Independence Day, consider the price of your family’s Liberty, and, as you listen to our national anthem, seriously answer the question at the end. “Does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave over the land of the free and the home of the brave?” Or does it hangs over the funeral procession of long dead Liberty with scavengers picking over her still corpse as we watch in silent impotent horror, doing nothing.

Be Brave. Be Free.

A Short Word: Have a True Independence Day

Each and every individual must decide whether they are a free person, “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights”, or if they are a subject of the government of the United States.

The Independence Day 2016 Weekend has arrived, and what a weekend most Americans undoubtedly have planned. Many have been working on these plans for weeks now. Saving up for beverages, piles of meat, all important buns, and don’t forget the ketchup and mustard. The grill is cleaned, the freezer is full, and everything is set to make this a great time for all. This is as good a way as any to spend the holiday weekend, soaking in the superficial patriotism of the weekend with family and friends.

There is just one more ingredient needed to make it a celebration of actual patriotism, not just the photo patriotism that even American leftists can enjoy. All one must do in order to elevate the event to the next level is one more thing: do what Americans did on that first Independence Day and read the Declaration of Independence aloud at your gathering. Read it with reverence, with boldness, and with the spirit of Liberty.

Don’t just read the preamble, that’s patriotism for kids. Read the entire thing, right up to “we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor“. Then consider how stands the country that the Founders gave us? Do any of those transgressions against Life, Liberty, and Property  committed by King George III against the colonies sound familiar at all? Do we still have half the courage and spirit of independence that the Founding Fathers possessed?

Let’s not waste time talking about political candidates or even political parties. The Spirit of Liberty is the responsibility of each and every individual citizen. Each and every individual must decide whether they are a free person, “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights“, or if they are a subject of the government of the United States. That is the difference between photo patriotism and actual patriotism. Only men and women of true patriotism will fight to be free.

Only true patriots understand what is meant by “Be Brave. Be Free.
