Let men see, let them know, a real man, who lives as he was meant to live.
– Marcus Aurelius
He lies awake at night, unable to sleep, his heart consumed with worry. He gets up, careful not to wake his wife sleeping restlessly. In the dim light, he looks at her, her belly swelling with their unborn child. He walks out into the hallway and checks on each of his children. In the darkness, his oldest cries from hunger, and it kills him.
He walks out into the night and looks up at the sky. Dropping to his knees, the father prays to God to help him provide for his family. He prays for the strength to do what needs to be done to feed his family. He prays for God to look over his family, while he does what a man must do so that his family will not be hungry.
He goes back to bed and sleeps uneasily. When the morning comes, he knows what he must do. He packs some clothes. He holds his children like he doesn’t know when he’ll see them again, because he doesn’t. He kisses his wife, trying not thinking about how long it will have to last him. Before his resolve can break, he takes the road north.
Who really believes that a true man, made in the image of God, hearing the cries of his hungry children, knowing the fears of his true wife, would let a wall stop him? This is the fundamental miscalculation made by border hawks. They presume that the men and women coming across the border are not just different but less than they are.
The tears of your children are motivation to move mountains one stone at a time, if need be. The answer to the question “What should I do to take care of my family’s needs?” is always “Whatever it takes.” By that measure, any law that stands between a man and the means to feed his family is pure evil, and a true man of God is obligated to break them.
Only tyrants treat laws as though they are infallible, but the conservative understands what matters is what is right, not what is legal. From the Boston Tea Party to the Emancipation Proclamation, from the Declaration of Independence to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, our history has been about tearing down such laws and institutions.
The American creed is “liberty and justice for all“, not for “some” or even “us“. After all, would any of us do any less for our family?
